iOS 18.3 Apple Intelligence On By Default

Apple provided developers and public beta testers with the release candidate version of iOS 18.3 today. It will be released to the public soon, but here is a warning about a new setting that Apple has turned on by default — and you may want to switch it off.

The New Setting That’s Causing a Stir

Apple’s constant drive to innovate often results in a handful of experimentations, some that hit the mark and others that leave users scratching their heads.

The iPhone maker’s AI-enabled Apple Intelligence launched in iOS 18.1, including Siri integration with ChatGPT in iOS 18.2. However, users currently have to turn this on to use the features on their iPhone.

Not anymore, from iOS 18.3 due to arrive next week, as Apple Intelligence will now be on by default.

The iOS 18.3 change is confirmed by Apple’s beta release notes, which read:

“For users new or upgrading to iOS 18.3, Apple Intelligence will be enabled automatically during iPhone onboarding. Users will have access to Apple Intelligence features after setting up their devices.”

What’s The Issue?

Apple Intelligence has already received quite a bit of criticism for rewriting external providers notifications into ‘better’ summaries.

The problem is, it’s got many of them completely wrong!

Take a look at this well publicised example below:

apple intelligence issues 1

Notification summaries for News & Entertainment apps are temporarily unavailable, and users who opt-in will see them again when the feature becomes available – however the mangling in the consolidation of other notification summaries is still a risk!

How to Take Control

To disable Apple Intelligence, users will need to navigate to the Apple Intelligence & Siri Settings panel and turn off the Apple Intelligence toggle.

Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri and turn the toggle to Off.

Exploring iOS 18.3: Beyond the Troublesome Setting

Outside this small hiccup, iOS 18.3 offers a suite of exciting features you’ll want to make the most of.

Visual intelligence with Camera Control (All iPhone 16 models)
– Add an event to Calendar from a poster or flyer
– Easily identify plants and animals

Notification summaries (All iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max)
– Easily manage settings for notification summaries from the Lock Screen
– Updated style for summarized notifications better distinguishes them from other notifications by using italicized text as well as the glyph
